How to beat Man City: Five tactical things every team must do
Manchester City show no sign of slowing down. In fact, their 6-1 destruction of Huddersfield Town at the Etihad last weekend suggests Pep Guardiola has even more weapons in his arsenal this season, has an even greater variety of tactical tricks with which to score a decisive goal.
The Catalan traditionally uses the opening few games of a new season to trial formations and bank them for later use, which explains why City played with overlapping full-backs and wingers that cut inside against Arsenal (the reverse of their main strategy in 2017/18) before switching to a crossing-heavy 3-5-2 against Huddersfield. We will doubtless see plenty more formations, innovations, and tweaks in the coming weeks.

La Liga set to stage match in US as battle to match Premier League grows
• Regular-season fixture could take place as early as this season
• El Clásico would remain in Spain under proposals
La Liga is set to stage a regular-season match in the United States, possibly as early as this year, but a clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona is pretty much out of the question.
The league said on Thursday it is planning to play a match across the Atlantic as part of a new 15-year partnership with the sports and entertainment group Relevent to promote the game in North America. The group operates the International Champions Cup, the world’s largest summer club tournament. Barcelona and Real Madrid faced each other in the tournament in Miami last year.

• Goal came deep into injury-time for 3-2 win against Orlando
Wayne Rooney’s eventful start to life at DC United continued with an astonishing passage of play in the 96th minute against Orlando City which saw him run half the length of the pitch to prevent a near-certain goal, before immediately setting up the winner. Nottingham Forest have already splashed out £24m on 11 new faces this summer, including £13.2m record-signing Joao Carvalho – and now they want to add Sam Byram from West Ham United. “He’s one on the list,” Aitor Karanka said. “We have been working since May to try and build a good squad.” On Saturday, the Forest manager warned his new flurry of recruits that they have no time to bed in:
The players from abroad are realising that the Championship is really tough; it is not the Champions League, Portuguese league or the Spanish league, it is really tough and everybody has to realise that we need to fight with the same intensity. In this squad they don’t have time to settle in, because if they take time they know they are going to lose their position. You don’t realise how big, how tough this league is until the moment you arrive here. When you are here, you enjoy it and you suffer it

The making of Frank Lampard: why Derby manager can be a success
Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink feels his old Chelsea teammate has what it takes to be a good manager as he embarks on his debut season in the dugout
Taken in isolation, Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink’s description of Frank Lampard as a player without an awe-inspiring skill could be interpreted as an insult. When Hasselbaink thinks back to the youngster who joined him at Chelsea in 2001, he recalls a footballer with a good shot, decent technique and some pace. “He tackled alright,” the Dutchman says. “I think if you look at his abilities, there was nothing really outstanding.”
Hasselbaink, however, is in the middle of paying Lampard a glowing compliment. The point he wants to get across is how hard Derby County’s new manager worked to become one of the finest footballers of his generation. “Everything together made him an exceptional player,” the former Chelsea striker says. “He came from West Ham and we had some big names in the team, but it didn’t faze him. He wanted to show he was worth the money. Mentally, he was one of the strongest players ever. Nothing really knocked him back. That will be a good asset for him as a manager. You have to have a thick skin.”

Manchester United women to face Liverpool in inaugural match
• Chelsea to face Manchester City in WSL opener
Manchester United women’s first game following their inception earlier this year will be against Liverpool as the fixture list for the new season was unveiled on Wednesday.
United face their Merseyside rivals in Group Two North of the Continental League Cup on 19 August. That will see the battle of the two new managers as United’s Casey Stoney takes on former Leeds and Rotherham manager Neil Redfearn, who was appointed Reds boss in June. United’s first match in the Women’s Championship will be against Aston Villa on 8 September.
