Lamela had three presentable chances when Spurs were 1-0 up against Internazionale in the Champions League on Tuesday night only to fail to take them. Kane had earlier missed another opportunity when well-placed at 0-0 and the profligacy would return to haunt them as Inter scored two late goals to snatch a 2-1 win.

Tottenham’s two previous trips to San Siro have been eventful to say the least. Eight years have passed since Gareth Bale announced himself on the European stage with a second-half hat-trick in Milan. Those goals weren’t enough for Spurs to avoid defeat on the night, having conceded four goals before the break, but they did go through as group winners – along with Inter. Spurs’ most recent visit to San Siro, for the second leg of their Europa League last-16 tie in 2013, ended in sheer relief. Spurs went into the game with a 3-0 lead from the first leg but again conceded four, only scraping through thanks to a late away goal from Emmanuel Adebayor.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s first Serie A goal arrived right on schedule. Granted, it might not have felt that way to the Juventus supporters who had been waiting impatiently for this moment since July. But by opening his account in their fourth league game, with his 28th shot of the season, he was emulating precisely the start he made with Real Madrid in 2017-18.
Nobody can truly have believed his ‘drought’ would go on forever, yet the relief at its ending was evident even in Ronaldo’s performance. His first goal was a tap-in: described by Tuttosport as “pushed into an empty net from 30cm out”. Yet it felt like no accident that the Portuguese’s second should arrive 15 minutes later, drilled into the bottom corner with a confidence that had hitherto been lacking.

The scintillating spell before half-time that saw Watford’s defence torn to shreds by the pace and power of José Mourinho’s frontline was a timely reminder that, despite the much-criticised start to the season, he has an attack with frightening potential.
Yet United eventually left Vicarage Road indebted to David de Gea for ending their opponents’ 100% record following a shaky second-half display that must have tested even Mourinho’s nerves, and it was the failure to kill off the game that would have concerned their manager most. Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sánchez and Paul Pogba spurned chances to score a decisive third goal on the break, leading to a frantic final period that led to Nemanja Matic being dismissed for a second booking just before their goalkeeper’s late heroics.

A warm afternoon in south Manchester and Mark Chapman is in relaxed mood. In a few hours he will back on BBC Radio Five Live, presenting a show on England’s latest Test collapse, but for now he is sat in the kitchen of his family home with a mug of coffee in hand, ready to embark on a conversation that has been more than two months in the making.
It was in late June that I contacted Chapman to ask for help with something I was writing at the time. Chapman being Chapman, he did his best to be of assistance and, during our conversation, made a comment in regards to being in Russia on World Cup-hosting duties for the BBC that grabbed the attention. “The level of scrutiny is exhausting. I’ve never known anything like it.” We agreed to discuss this in more detail when he returned home and so, with coffees poured, that is what occurred on a quiet, late summer’s day.
