Antonio Conte lambasts Chelsea’s ‘really, really bad’ display at Roma
• Roma had more hunger, more desire, more fight says Chelsea manager
• Conte says team were complacent in Champions League mauling

Antonio Conte has questioned his side’s hunger, desire and will to fight and suggested some players at Chelsea have been guilty of complacency as his team were embarrassed by Roma to surrender leadership of their Champions League group.

The visitors were behind after 38 seconds at the Stadio Olimpico and, despite creating chances before the break, wilted horribly in a disjointed and chaotic second-half display that left the head coach livid. The emphatic 3-0 defeat puts Chelsea second in the group, albeit they were spared further damage by Atlético Madrid’s failure to beat Qarabag’s 10 men in Spain, and with concern mounting over Sunday’s visit of Manchester United to Stamford Bridge.

Raf Honigstein believes Jurgen Klopp has the ability to correct Liverpool's defensive struggles and turn the season around. Jurgen Klopp says Simon Mignolet will keep his place as Liverpool's No. 1 goalkeeper for Saturday's meeting with Huddersfield Town. Klopp will resist calls to drop Mignolet after the Belgium international's indifferent performance in last weekend's 4-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. Mignolet endured a difficult afternoon at Wembley, but Loris Karius or Danny Ward will not get their chance to stake a claim against Huddersfield. "Simon will play," Klopp said. Liverpool’s Jürgen Klopp: Lovren and Mignolet must pick themselves up

Liverpool’s Jürgen Klopp: Lovren and Mignolet must pick themselves up
• Under-fire duo must wait to see if they will start against Huddersfield
• Klopp: ‘We all make a mistake. I would never let them down’

Jürgen Klopp has told Dejan Lovren and Simon Mignolet he would “never let them down” but admitted the pair must wait to discover whether they will face Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Liverpool central defender and goalkeeper were both culpable for a 4-1 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, when Lovren suffered the ignominy of being substituted after 31 minutes. In an interview for Saturday’s Football Focus, Klopp declined to say whether the duo will be dropped for their poor performances at Wembley. But he insisted they retain his support and should ignore the criticism that has flowed their way since Sunday.

Inter beats Sampdoria to take lead at least for a night

Inter beats Sampdoria to take lead at least for a night

MILAN — Inter Milan moved atop Serie A at least for a night with a 3-2 win over Sampdoria on Tuesday.

Inter captain Mauro Icardi scored either side of halftime after Milan Skriniar found the target early on at the San Siro. Both had previously played for Sampdoria.

Dawid Kownacki and Fabio Quagliarella scored late for the visitors.

Despite the victory, Icardi said he was a "bit angry" that Inter had missed so many chances – hitting the woodwork three times – and then allowed Sampdoria to make it close at the end.

"We can’t risk anything in matches like these," Icardi added. "We know what we’re capable of. We’re a great squad with strong players … we’re capable of much more than what we’re doing now."

Remaining unbeaten, Inter moved one point ahead of Napoli, which visits struggling Genoa on Wednesday.

Sampdoria, which has a game in hand, remained sixth after only its second loss.

Before kickoff, Icardi and the referee presented children with copies of Anne Frank’s "The Diary of a Young Girl," and Primo Levi’s "Survival in Auschwitz" (also known as "If This is a Man"), part of an initiative of Holocaust remembrance in the wake of anti-Semitic acts by Lazio fans.

Coming off a 0-0 draw at Napoli on Saturday, Inter immediately showed off its title credentials.

Skriniar was left unmarked to score from inside the box following a corner but wouldn’t celebrate the goal against the team where he had played for the past two seasons.

Ivan Perisic then nearly scored from long distance with the goalkeeper out of position, but his effort hit the post.

Icardi’s 10th of the season came shortly after the half-hour mark with an angled, bouncing shot after being set up by Matias Vecino.

Icardi also sent a header against the post in the first half following a corner taken by Antonio Candreva.

Icardi got his second — his 11th goal in 10 matches — by turning home a cross from Perisic, who also hit the crossbar in the 63rd minute.

A minute later, Kownacki finished off a counterattack by taking advantage of a lapse in concentration by Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

Quagliarella scored with a header five minutes from the end.

Inter’s current position is a sharp contrast from where the club stood a year ago, when it appeared lost under Frank de Boer.

Including Roberto Mancini’s surprise resignation two weeks before the season began, Inter struggled through four managerial changes in 2016-17 and finished seventh to miss out on European competition.

But order appears to have been restored with the appointment of former Roma coach Luciano Spalletti in June.

Muguruza keen to press on after seeing off Ostapenko

Garbine Muguruza made a winning start to her third consecutive appearance at the WTA Finals with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Jelena Ostapenko on Sunday but the Spaniard will continue to push herself through the group stage knowing anything can happen.

At her first appearance in Singapore, the world number two won all three round-robin matches before losing a tight semi-final to an inspired Agnieszka Radwanska, while last year she was eliminated early after losing two of her three ties.

On both occasions, the eventual champion (Radwanska in 2015 and Dominika Cibulkova last year) sneaked into the knockout stage with losing 1-2 records in pool play.

"Well, I think it's very important to start with a win," the Wimbledon champion told reporters.

"What I learned from the past is that every game counts, every set, because at the end only two (players per group) are going to pass. And previous winners had lost twice and they have won, which is incredible," she added.

"I take it as a final, honestly, every point, every game, every set."

Mata urges United unity after Huddersfield embarrassment

Juan Mata has urged Manchester United to stick together in the wake of their stunning Premier League defeat to Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

The Terriers, promoted to the top flight via the play-offs last season, claimed a first win over United in 65 years with a 2-1 victory.

Goals from Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre condemned United to a first league defeat of the season despite Marcus Rashford pulling one back for Jose Mourinho's men.

They are now five points adrift of neighbours and league leaders Manchester City, with a furious Mourinho conceding United deserved to be punished for their lacklustre performance.

But midfielder Mata, taken off at half-time, has preached unity in response to the setback ahead of an EFL Cup tie with Swansea City and the visit of Tottenham in the Premier League.

Verstappen podium demotion stirs up a storm

Max Verstappen accused Formula One stewards of killing the sport and suggested fans could stay away in protest after he was stripped of a podium place at the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday.

With Red Bull boss Christian Horner and past champions joining in the outcry, the 20-year-old Dutch driver vented his feelings.

"The engine penalty is what it is," said Verstappen, who started 16th after being demoted for power unit changes. "We had a great race but with those stupid decisions you kill the sport.

"I hope the fans do not like this decision and next year they do not come."

Verstappen had thrilled the crowd with a last lap overtaking move on Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to take third place and was voted driver of the day by fans.

He was then demoted to fourth, while waiting with race winner Lewis Hamilton and second-placed Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel in the pre-podium room, for exceeding the track limits to gain an advantage.

As the driver headed back down the stairs, team principal Horner let rip at what he saw as inconsistent behaviour by the stewards who had not punished others for similar offences during the race.

"It is an appalling decision. They have robbed all of the fans here. It was a great grand prix and they have screwed it up," he said.

"We could pull out five or six different incidents today of cars going off track," he said. "Where do you gain an advantage and not gain an advantage?"

It was the second time that Verstappen has been demoted from the podium by stewards post-race, with the youngster also missing out in Mexico last year for cutting a corner.

Verstappen's father Jos was scathing of the decision on social media, with a series of comments on Twitter suggesting Ferrari favouritism.

"Shame on you FIA," he said referring to the sport's governing body. "Obviously F1 don't know what racing is."

Mercedes celebrate toughest title yet

Mercedes joined a select group of teams to have won the Formula One constructors' championship for four years in a row on Sunday and recognised it as their toughest title yet.

With an unassailable lead of 147 points with 129 remaining from the final three races, Mercedes joined Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull who racked up similar streaks during their years of dominance.

Unlike their rivals, Mercedes have managed to stay on top despite major rule changes at the end of last year that introduced wider tyres and revised aerodynamics to make the cars faster and harder to handle.

And this season they have been fighting a resurgent and determined Ferrari rather than just waging an internal battle between team mates.

"This for us was the most difficult one because Ferrari was competitive and we still made it," the team's non-executive chairman Niki Lauda, himself a triple world champion, told reporters at the U.S. Grand Prix.

Mercedes have dominated since the start of the 1.6 litre V6 turbo hybrid era in 2014, and are set to win both titles again this year.

They have won 11 of 17 races so far this season and 62 of 76 since the start of 2014.

Britain's Lewis Hamilton, who won at the Circuit of the Americas on Sunday for the fifth time in six years, has won nine times this year and is a fingertip away from his own fourth championship.

His title looks sure to come in Mexico next weekend, barring misfortune.

It would have been five had now-retired team mate Nico Rosberg not beaten him last year in a season where car reliability played a major part in the eventual outcome.

Mercedes have also qualified on pole position for 69 of the last 76 races and Hamilton, who holds the sport's all-time career record of 72, has taken 11 of them this season alone.

"When we set our objectives at the beginning of the year it was to win both championships and be the first team to do that through a regulation change like this," said team boss Toto Wolff.

"Having achieved that here in Austin with three races to go, it feels really unbelievable. It's just the reward for so many people that have been hard working," added the Austrian, his briefing interrupted by Ferrari boss Maurizio Arrivabene entering to congratulate him with a hug.

"You always try to identify silver bullets that make the difference but the fact is that we have a really great dynamic within the team and we enjoy doing what we do, pulling it all together. Bringing it home feels just super."
