Bust-ups & barnies: Why Luis Enrique the 'culture shock' Arsenal need

COMMENT: Luis Enrique and Arsenal? This is going to be fun. The players may be talking 'culture shock' with a first managerial change in 22 years. But if it is to be Enrique, they ain't seen nothing yet...

Appearances. Reputation. They can deceive. Especially when forged away from the English media. And in the immediate aftermath of Enrique's departure from Barcelona a year ago, potrayals of his management had him closer to Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte than Pep Guardiola and his mooted predecessor, Arsene Wenger.

TALKING TACTICS: Naive Mourinho hands Man City title; Giroud emulating Diego Costa; Perez shines for Newcastle;

On Saturday morning this didn't look like a particularly attractive set of Premier League fixtures, and yet Chelsea's comeback victory against Southampton, Arsenal's defeat to Newcastle United, and West Bromwich Albion's 1-0 triumph at Old Trafford provided three of the most exciting results of recent weeks.

Together, they had a telling impact on the 2017/18 season. Manchester City are champions, Newcastle United have improbably beaten the drop, and Southampton are suddenly five points short of 17th.

Noisy neighbours: other Manchester derbies that really mattered

Noisy neighbours: other Manchester derbies that really mattered

With City playing for the title at home to United on Saturday, we look back at meetings memorable for more than local pride

In a season that finished with Everton winning the title, both Manchester clubs were mired in relegation trouble and met at Maine Road for a derby that could scarcely have had more at stake for the 52,424 present. City, a goal up and looking good for the win, conceded a needless equaliser when Dave Wagstaffe’s backpass was intercepted by Denis Law, prompting the goalkeeper, Harry Dowd, to bring the United forward to ground in the penalty area. Albert Quixall scored from the spot, earning United a point that helped them stay up, while City ended up two places below them and were relegated. United went on to win that season’s FA Cup, their first major trophy since the Munich air disaster five years previously. City remained in the Second Division for three years until they were marched out as champions by Joe Mercer.

Welcome to the big one – if you’re a Stoke fan, anyway! For Arsenal the league season has long since a bit ... how do the kids say ... “meh”, but we have here in our hands an affair that could make an impact on the relegation battle. Because if the Gunners are not at full throttle, and would rather pay fuller attention to Thursday’s assignment with CSKA Moscow (it really has come to this) then perhaps Paul Lambert’s side have the perfect opportunity to record a result that might put them in with a big shout of safety.

They could do with one, as the game are running out. Stoke have won once since 23 December and, while Lambert hasn’t done too much wrong since replacing Mark Hughes, it would be a stretch to say the change has made a big difference. They are three points from 17th place, effectively four if you consider their goal difference, and with Spurs up next week you’d have to say these matches against the top six aren’t really free hits anymore.
